Chris Matthews is a historical archaeologist and professor of anthropology at Montclair State University. His work is focused on the archaeology and history of marginalized and racialized communities in North America with a focus on the mid-Atlantic region. He is the author and editor of several books including The Archaeology of American Capitalism and The Archaeology of Race in the Northeast. His most recent book, A Struggle for Heritage: Archaeology and Civil Rights in a Long Island Community, examines how conflicting histories reinforce inequalities in both local communities and professional heritage work.
