Building a Place for History
Vanessa Smiley is the Chief of Interpretation and Education at Morristown National Historical Park. She has a Bachelor of Arts in Historic Preservation and a Masters of Science in Resource Interpretation. Her Masters thesis was titled, “Understanding, Implementing, and Assessing Civic Engagement Programs in the National Park Service and Applying it to Current Urban Youth Programming.” This has left her with an invested interest in the civic engagement & youth programming efforts of the NPS Centennial. Vanessa also has strong background and experience in partnership outreach and program development; interpretative media design; social media, and volunteer management and coordination. With 10 years of National Park Service experience under her belt, Vanessa has worked in a number of parks including Harpers Ferry National Historical Park, Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park, and the George Washington Memorial Parkway sites of Clara Barton National Historic Site, Great Falls Park, and Glen Echo Park.
