Back to the Basics: Educating Historic Preservation Commission Members and the People You Serve
About this Session
In October 2025, Governor Phil Murphy signed legislation that requires members of Historic Preservation Commissions (HPCs) to complete trainings to serve on the commissions. The new legislation highlights the importance of continuing education and training not only for commission members, but also for the people they serve.
This panel session has three goals:
- Educate current and future HPC members on the new training requirements and what they should expect (Glenn Ceponis, NJHT)
- Discuss the different ways HPCs can educate those they serve, including funding opportunities for those materials (Andrea Tingey, HPO)
- Provide first-hand experience from a current HPC chair on the ways he educated himself, others on his commission, and those his commission serves in order to encourage more informed applications (Frank Caruso, Burlington City HPC Chair)
