About this Session

This panel, “A Collaborative, Interdisciplinary Approach to Interpreting New Jersey History Along the Washington–Rochambeau Revolutionary Route in Westfield, New Jersey,” brings together experts from multiple fields to explore innovative approaches to historical interpretation and preservation. Panelists include Wolfram Hoefer, PhD, Professor at the Rutgers Department of Landscape Architecture, who will discuss landscape and spatial analysis in Westfield's historical preservation and interpretation effort; Brian Remite, President, Curator, and Archivist at the Westfield Historical Society, who will provide insights on archival research conducted about the local history; and Jennifer Carlson Jaruzelski, Chair of the Westfield Historic Preservation Commission, who will highlight the WHP's preservation policy including the 2024 Westfield Historic Preservation Master Plan Element. The session will be moderated by Julia M. Diddell, Executive Director of W3R-NJ, who will guide discussion on the collaborative and interdisciplinary efforts underway to preserve and interpret Westfield’s Revolutionary War heritage along the Washington–Rochambeau Revolutionary Route.

Participants will gain an understanding of how scholarship, community partnerships, and preservation practice intersect to bring historic preservation and interpretation to life, offering replicable strategies for other historic communities.
