Installing New Wood Shingle and Shake Roofs on Historic Buildings

This presentation will look at the history of wood roofs in the Northeast reviewing early American roof styles, the use of shingles and shakes and the availability and use of cedar in NJ . There will be a summary of types, grades, and fire treatment of wood shingles and available technical support from the Cedar Shake and Shingle Bureau. We will review standards for roof replacements included the Secretary of the Interior Guidelines, preservation briefs and potential conflicts with building code requirements. Guidelines will be provided on specific research and development of traditional details, drawings and specifications for wood shingle and shake roofs. Finally we will look at quality control during construction to ensure correct installation. This is a technical presentation designed for architects and owners of historic buildings. Examples of materials will be available to review.
