Canal Society of New Jersey

The Canal Society of New Jersey is a non-profit organization formed in 1969 to promote interest in New Jersey’s two historic towpath canals, to advocate for the preservation of canal remains and artifacts, and to study their history. The Society also seeks to promote public education and open space recreation by working with communities across New Jersey to create a state-wide Morris Canal Greenway corridor. We also partner with New Jersey State Parks to help promote and main the D&R State Park.

Long before railroads became a viable transportation option, the completion of the Morris Canal gave New Jersey its first interstate transportation system. Iron-making settlements in the New Jersey Highlands grew into industrial towns, and with the delivery of Pennsylvania anthracite coal, coastal towns developed into major industrial cities.
Today, the Canal Society of New Jersey is working with communities, organizations, and agencies such as the North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority to create a Morris Canal Greenway that preserves the canal’s
