Sessions

(S-5) Developing & Applying Historic Design Guidelines in New Jersey

Time:
Thursday, 2:00 - 3:15 pm
Location:
Audience: AIA, AICP, CRM, HPC, M/C
Historic Design Guidelines are essential tools, but how well they work depends on context, clear rules, and good follow-through. This session compares two different examples: Cape May, with its well-known historic district and long-standing regulatory commission, and Red Bank, where new guidelines support an advisory commission. Panelists will discuss how local laws, building types, and community needs shape these guidelines. They will share real-world advice on using the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards and keeping historic character while meeting today’s challenges.
