Eric Nelsen

 Public Historian, Palisades Interstate Park

Eric Nelsen was hired as a seasonal employee at the Palisades Interstate Park in New Jersey in 1992. He earned a degree in English from Montclair State University in 1997, and the next year became a full-time public historian at the park. He oversees the park’s historic Kearney House, where he’s helped to develop a unique “living history” program based on the house’s role as a nineteenth-century Hudson River tavern and homestead. In the office, he helps develop interpretive programing and supervises park publications, including brochures, maps, and interpretive signs. On days off, Eric enjoys being outdoors, getting into or onto the water, cycling, and time travel.

(S-2) Engaging the Public with Preservation: 50 Years of Lessons

Time:
Thursday, 10:45 am - 12:00 pm
Location:
Audience: H, HT, M/C, NP
In 2026, historic sites face shrinking budgets and public discourse clouded by misinformation. This session revisits 1976 to examine what worked—and what didn’t—for public engagement and historical interpretation. Part presentation, part workshop, we trace the evolution of interpretive language and the shift from instructive to affective portrayals of history over 50 years. Attendees will explore questions such as the merits of digital versus analog tools to engage audiences, the Bicentennial’s influence on historical narratives, and strategies for executing the 250th with existing resources.
