Carin Berkowitz is the Executive Director of the New Jersey Council for the Humanities (NJCH), an independent 501c3 nonprofit organization devoted to supporting and promoting the humanities across the state of New Jersey. She joined NJCH 2018 after having served for eight years as the Director of Historical Research at the Science History Institute, a museum, library, and center for scholarship in Philadelphia. Carin is a passionate advocate for the humanities within New Jersey and sees the public humanities as crucial for our democracy. She has served in governance or Board capacities within American Historical Association, the History of Science Society, ArtPride, and the Federation of State Humanities Councils. Carin has a B.A. in English Literature from Johns Hopkins University and a Ph.D. in the history of science from Cornell University and has published extensively on the historical intersections of art, medicine, and science.
